Book Review: Merry-Go Sorry

By Lin Wisman

As a research scientist Richard Cuddihy was dedicated to his work. For 20 years he was committed to his job. In April of 1988 his stroke occurred, and abruptly changed his life. His book “Merry-Go-Sorry” is a memoir of the years following the event.

Even though he suffered aphasia he continued his occupational effort. He was involved with the NASA Safety Review Panel for the Galileo Space Mission. The book includes data on his struggles with the Panel. He was able in spite of his disabilities to fight in necessary arenas.

He was fortunate in that he was able to return to work while attending physical therapy. He pushed himself to do both. He was also fortunate in that his employer was able to bend to accommodate needs.

This book not only explains the therapies he used, but also spends a great amount of time explaining his research passion and how it was affected by his stroke.

This book brings hope to others who have had strokes. He came to terms with what it means to be a research scientist who has had a stroke. He found new outlets for his passions. He shows each of us that it is possible to create a new reality for oneself after a stroke.
